One of my Inspector claims that impact is a requirement for P-23 materials as per sec IX ,but I am no able to find it.Does any body know in which part of the code SEC IX it is mentioned.

Section IX doesnt require impacts, only the constructing codes specify when impacts are required.

Inform your inspector that you wish to do everything necessary to comply with his expertise, and then ask him to kindly show you where Section IX says that. Enjoy.

;-)  Great answer!

It works too. As long as you don't have any inspection hold points cause that boys gonna be turnin pages til the last snowfall in Kazahkstan.

By P-23, I assume he's talking about an aluminum alloy, right?

Al

I was thinkin Al to Al.  Not being redundant. :>)
In which case notched tensiles might be a better test.
Though it could be the W/V/Nb 2 1/4 Cr stuff too. Though the hyphen indicates Al, Al.

Impact testing doesn't usually apply to aluminum in my experience. Aluminum's mechanical properties actually improve at lower temperatures until you get really low.

Best regards - Al

Me too Al. Recognizing that the Al family of alloys is expanding all the time, though not so much in the P-23 group, to my knowledge, the new stuff tending towards much higher strength alloys, Al, as a austenitic microstruture will generally not have the ductile to brittle transition typical of impact testing regime alloys.

huh.  maybe a newby Inspector?

No not usually. Until you get into cryogenic ranges, then it gets confugaled.

Whats your construction code?

Application is cryogenic and  code is IS standard. thanks and regards.
