Lately I have had some problem with suck back in the root pass in the bottom section of the pipe. (5-7 o'clock). Am I just goin too hot and letting the metal fall back out at me or what? Too slow or maybe a combination of the two?

Thanks for any input!

SMAW 6010 5P+ on 12", .375 wall pipe.

when i get this problem, its directly related to how i travel with the rod (not necessarily the travel speed) either whip or dragging.
generally, i run hotter on the bottom than the top of the pipe.  if stay there too long, it can actually re-consume the weld.

With a 1/8" rod and 3/32" land and gap and about 90-95 amps, try a dragging motion...  stay in your joint with a short arc and keep a decent
sized key hole....Not too big... Make sure you flow in evenly to both sides of the joint and compensate for any hi-low on the fit up. ( This works well for me)....

Thanks all for the input. I had an opportunity to weld on some pipe the other day and I started to cool down a bit at the bottom, used a dragging motion and I also whipped the rod back and forth just a little bit and it seemed to stack up quite nicely.
