Thanks for the reply. I was kinda thinking the same. Someone told me they had a black face with a round armature and I tought all black face machine's had the hex shape. I told him maybe someone just changed the face plate because I have seen a bunch of black face plates on red face machine's I think when lincoln stop making face plate's the red ones sold out quick so they just started using the black one's they both share the same part numbers but now you can find a red one but not a black one. Thanks again.

there were black face machines in the early 70's with slick armitures just like the red fraces

72 or 73 not sure which. Early 70's models had blackface with round armature.

I had a couple 71s in the shop at the same time, both black faces, one round barrel, one hex. both were original. Lincoln tech told me they did not know, they thought the last round gen was code 7044. Have another black face 71 here now, round gen, all original, bought from the original owner. They all weld good.

Thanks for the info. I have one more question when did they stop using generators and started with alternators on the charging system? I have seen some black face's with what looks like a factory alternator with the regulator on the cross member frame. I know that my 66 sa 200 has a gen. with the reg. mounted on it and not the frame. Just wondering thats all. Thanks
