It has been a couple years since I have welded any pipe. I am wanting to go take my OK state Cert test so I have been practicing, its kicking my butt. Im useing 1/8 6011 (since I didnt have any 6010) on 6" pipe with a 3/32 gap. I tried it with no land because i had heard you can just turn your heat up and drag it in, well that didnt work. I would greatly appreciate anyones input as far as gap, land, amps. I am useing a Miller Bobcat 250 that I bought a month or so ago and Im still trying to get a feel for the settings. Thanks

i've tried 6011 on root passes.  it sucks!  get some 6010...it'll make a world of a difference!  you can't be guarranteed a nice root bead without a land using stick.  TIG and MIG, yes, but not with stick.  besides, you better get used to the way the inspector is gonna want you to fit up your test pieces because THAT'S the way you'll test.  uphill= 1/8" or 3/32" land, 1/8" gap, 70-85 amps  downhill= 1/16" land, 1/16" gap, 100-120 amps.

:"you can't be guarranteed a nice root bead without a land using stick."  I agree w/ welderdude.. with no a land, you wont be able to stack a good bead.  It might seem like it'll work at first, but it'll get hot quick!
