I recently bought a Victor Cutting Torch to cut scrap metal with.  I am using Oxygen and LP Gas.  I have a 50 ft "T" grade hose.  I am using a #2 Cutting tip on the Cutting torch. When I am cutting with the torch about every 3-5 seconds there is a low pop.    I have my Gas regulator set between 11-14 psi and the Oxygen Regulator between 30-35 psi.  This is very annoying more than anything, but I want to make sure I am not damaging anything.  I am using a #2 Cutting tip on the Cutting torch.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does the Victor torch require a special LP gas tip versus using an acetylene tip with LP?

An Acetylene tip came with the torch kit, but I purchased a # 2 tip for use LP gas.

The popping is most likely coming from your torch to tip connection.
Either it is not tight or the seat is damaged causing a leak.
The "pop" is leaked gas igniting.

It soounds like you have the wrong tip for LP gas.
Check your owner's manual or talk with you dealer to see which tips you should be using.  Tips made for acetylene will pop and snap if you try to use Mapp, propane, or any similar gas.

Sorry, I didn't notice your post above stating you did purchase a tip for natural gas.

The head of the torch needs to be reseated and a new tip.  When you reseat the head, always use a new tip.  John

It is "sucking air" from either the tip/head mating surfaces or the o-ring joint at the torch head/handle connection.

I will have to agree with Tim. Popping is caused by a faulty seal of the tip to head seat. "pop, pop, pop" it will continue to get worse. Everytime it pops you get a flame kick back to the mixer, eventually it will burn out your mixer.

Make sure your tip nut is snug. Sometimes you can tighten it down a little more and stop the popping. I have had Victor tips straight out of the box, last 2 uses and then be junk.

Kay, Do You repair torches & regulators in the shop?
Parent - - By KSellon (****) Date 02-13-2008 22:30
Yes sir- that is what occupies my time on Saturdays. The average cost is 18-45 dollars. If you were here in OKC, I'd fix it while you waited, about 10 mins.
