What properties does copper add to aluminum when the two are combined?  My employer is using 319 series cast aluminum on one of our products and I was just curious what the copper actually does.  Thanks

Copper additions to aluminum make them heat treatable and strong

Drawbacks are that most 2XXX series aluminums/copper are considered unweldable.
