Up Topic Welding Industry / Technical Discussions / correct AWS welding symbol or callout??
- - By shubyjames Date 02-22-2008 16:27
Please help! I have a .25" pressed pin going into a .25" plate. The pin will be protrude .38" on one side and will be flush on the other. It will be welded on the flush side by either a small puddle made by MIG or TIG process, or it might be fused by TIG with no filler. The question is what welding symbol depicts this? Nothing exactly defines this so we constantly argue over the correct symbol. Is it plug, edge, square, or what? The pin is flush with plate surface and will require no finish. Your comments are greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jim

Others might see it different, but I would call it out as a square groove butt weld and include the weld all around feature.

1 gmaw prep the flush side (break edge 1/8) use a flare-v-groove with flush symbol
2 gmaw plug weld with flush symbol
3 gmaw sq groove with flush symbol
4 gmaw edge weld with flush symbol

While I agree with what's posted above, i'm not seeing calling it an edge weld.
