Try using 6010

Try the same set-up as a 6010 joint on your 7018 joint (nickel land and 1/8" gap). In whatever position you are welding in, your tack preperations will be the difference in if you pass it or not.....

Do a search on 7018 open root and you will find plenty of info on this particular process.

3/32 land gap and rod,  Arc voltage (dig) @ 65-70. Straight polarity amperage approx 75-85 amps or set your heat in reverse pol and run a stringer in the vertical on plate. When running your root try to keep a 1/16-3/32 gap between your keyhole and rod while maintaining light constant pressure on the rod. Rod is kept perpendicular with a slight leading angle. I have used these peramiters in the past and they have always worked in my favor.
