Gas and diesel.  Up here around Green Bay and Appleton, Wi it's 3.68 for ULS diesel and 3.09 for 87 octane gas.
Parent - - By MDG Custom Weld (***) Date 02-26-2008 17:29
Ditto here in South East Michigan, fueled up @ 3.72 this morning, gas was 3.17

It's going nowhere but up :(
Parent - - By Kix (****) Date 02-26-2008 17:36
Yeah, on the way to work yesterday morning, diesel was 3.60 for ULSD and I didn't fill up because I though I would do it on the way home.  On the way home it was 3.71. I made it all the way hom and scored some LS diesel for 3.65. I really hope it goes down again someday.

The price of gas has no effect on me.  I just put in $20 worth each time.

I'm not sure if anyone can help me, but I'm looking to buy a 1968 Chevy pickup that has a 396 big block, a turbo 400 transmission, and a 308 rear end.  Does anyone have any idea what kind of avg. gas mileage I can expect? My Jeep's getting 16.4 mpg.  I'm sure I'm not going to get that with the '68 pickup, but with gas prices what they are, I don't want to buy the pickup if there's a big difference in mpg.

Hello Scott, 396 BIG BLOCK, automatic transmission says it all! Around town depending upon your foot, 8 to 10 maybe, on the highway cruising along at 55 or so,12 to 14, 70 to 75 mph., probably back to 10 to 12. Really nice truck/engine/tranny combo, not really nice in today's gas situation. Just my $.02  Best regards, Allan

Had a '66 Caprice SS 396 and auto tranny once...when it comes to performance, SIZE MATTERS... CID = neck snapping torque... Hope you have a good credit line at the Goodyear dealer! The carb...Wow, you could loose a 3/8" ratchet with socket down the primary's...Coming off the line, it could shoot you out the back window like a weenie out of the bun. Put a Holly Economaster carb on it, octane booster, stay out of the secondarys and you might see 15 mpg with a good tail wind and down 15 miles of 6% grade....If we could only get all those '60's muscle motors back on the road...We could invade Iran guilt free.............

Hello Superflux, I know this is taking the thread a bit off track but your mention of your Caprice reminded me of a car that a close friend of mine owned in high school. He had a '69 Chevelle 396 SS, his had the four-speed and also came with the factory 425 HP motor. As you mentioned, this combination was a neck-snapper and would educate you on the meaning of torque. We did run into one rather interesting situation while doing a bit of racing though, there was a yellow VW superbeetle in town that a young lady drove and one evening she challenged my buddy to run it off in town. He almost lost to her, seems that her bug was equipped with a turbo Carerra motor. Funny how that stuff works. Best regards, Allan

Superflux; I also had a 66 Caprice, 396 with 4 on floor.  I put an Edelbrock manifold and 850 Holley double-pumper on it... it would go nose and nose with my brothers 64 Vette and from the line, I could actually get the wheels right off the ground with the heavy old beast!  What a ride, I loved that car!!!

When I was a kid I had a '69 GTO [400" & manual]. They said that stood for gas, tires & oil, it burned all 3 to one degree or another, not much on the oil, but plenty on the other 2. ONE TIME I drove a whole tank without ever opening the secondairys, got a whopping 17 mpg. Usual was about 12. Gas here in south east Pa. was 3.099 on Sunday. I wish I stil had My '81 Civic.
Parent - By aevald (*****) Date 02-27-2008 09:02
Hello Dave, I bet you really wish you had that GTO back! I reminisce about all of the cars that I had as a kid and think of their worth, well I actually try not to do that, I know how badly I got scr--ed when I sold them.  My first car was a '65 Olds 442 with a 400 in it. It may have had a similar burning type regimen, at least two of them, tires and gas. When I first got it I didn't like the tires that were on the rear, they were almost brand new, but I managed to remove all of the tread within about a week and a half. Also got to know Joe/Law much more intimately than I wanted to. Right now I drive a '90 Camry, nothing like that Olds, but at least it gets 30+ mpg. Thanks, for the trip down memory road. Allan

Diesel is so high in S/E Pennsylvainia that even the Amish are complaining!@#$%
Parent - - By g32141 (**) Date 03-15-2008 02:11
Do they use it to burn their outhose residue like we did in the Army?
Parent - By DaveBoyer (*****) Date 03-15-2008 07:00
A big chunk of the Amish use modern diesel tractors - with iron wheels. Looks sort of funny to Me.

I thought it was the other way around with the lubing of the injectors.  The LSD lubes better then the ULSD, and the 5 and 10% bio blends with the ULSD are even worse.  The bio is suppose to help clean out your system though, but along with that comes fuel filter changing.  It nocks all the crud off of the fuel tank walls that eventaully ends up in your filter.

Just paid $3.18 for 87 octane gas in Jax Fl.  I have a brand new Honda Civic that gets 34mpg so I am not hurting too much.  I only drive 7500 miles a year because I am 3 miles from work.
Parent - - By mountainman (***) Date 02-26-2008 20:20
gas in central WA is around 3.20 for 87 octane at the cheaper stations and on up from there. that spurred me and my buddies to start truck pooling, it get's pretty tricky though when you chain four rigs together and the front one is doin all the work......there's got to be a better way...does anybody know how to make a push chain?

I've been in Finland for the last year plus.  Gasoline is recently about 1.45 euros per liter.  At todays rate of about 1.50 dollars per euro, that works out to about $8.23 per gallon.  I'm doing a lot more walking than I used to do.

Well, we probably have that to look forward to in the near future and we probably get paid less.  These guys working the oil stock must be making a killing off of us.  I guess we could be doing the same thing if we new how so I can't complain to much.

U.S. $3.25 here in Sandy Eggo.

My daily driver is a '68 Olds with the 455.  Edelbrock Performer manifold and carb.  9 miles per gallon but I only have a 5 mile (one way) commute.

COIN?  really? COIN?    Look Kix that may be how they do it up in Wisconsin and I know you are acclimatizing yourself to your new digs...but take it from a friend and don't pick up this local custom.  Gas is WAY to xpensive to be lugging around large heavy bags of change...go back to the old ways and use paper or plastic money and it will help you save on gas and tires.  If I tried to fill up the ole suburban that way I would probably break my back just taking out my wallet.

Between 309 and 314 here for pig swill 87 octane.   That new bike payment will only cost me $60 a month now if I ride it everyday.....whoo hoo gas goes up I get a bike....there is an upside to everything if you look hard enough...or just stand on your head.

Look at that, diesel ranging from 3.27 to 3.75.  Thats just plain stupid.  Diesel just went up to 3.75 up here in Appleton Wi.  I can find a couple of stations that have the #2 LSD for 3.65.

Oh, quit whining. After all Europe is paying the comparable of what? 5, 6, 7 dollars a gallon!!! We got it good here. And quit byin those gas guzlin SUV's too. Spoiled Americans.

Thats the rationale anyway. And it won't stop until we realize where this philosophy is really coming from.

Paid $3.159 this morning in South Central PA for 87 octane.  Not sure about diesel but, http://www.pennsylvaniagasprices.com/index.aspx?fuel=D has it going anywhere from $3.49 to $3.99.
Parent - - By ctacker (****) Date 03-03-2008 20:39 Edited 03-03-2008 20:47
3.45 for 87 oct.  and seen 3.83 for diesel
edit: in midwestern WA

I have been reading that all of us will be seeing $4.00 gas and $4.50 diesel by mid summer.

I guess they are telling us that now so when it only goes to $3.99, we're all happy?

Now how many years is it going to take before we are at the same $5 or $6 that Europe has now...1 or 2???
Parent - - By ctacker (****) Date 03-03-2008 21:55
I am still convinced I need to sell coffee! Starbucks is getting somewhere in the area of $28 a gallon at their prices and no one complains!
Parent - - By Milton Gravitt (***) Date 03-04-2008 01:44
I went to Canada last October and at that time gas there was .95 cents a liter. I would like to know what it is now? It's probably $2.00 a liter now.
Parent - By up-ten (***) Date 03-07-2008 04:41
Now we are paying $1.07 a liter for diesel or $4.81/gal. Lately, I've been on a full supply job which includes fuel in the truck so, I haven't had to suffer any costs...yet!
Parent - By Plasma56 (**) Date 04-01-2008 19:51
Nope, Edmonton Alberta $1.14 for regular.

How can You blame the oil companies for charging $3 something a gallon for fuel when plenty of people pay a buck for a little bottle of water?
Parent - - By Tommyjoking (****) Date 03-04-2008 09:57 Edited 03-04-2008 10:00
Dave...

I don't have to have that bottle of water..good point tho...work is 40 miles away, I don't mind horses but I would only get about 3 hours of sleep a day if I used one. I am not sure if they would put up a hitching post for me at the airport.  I do not blame the oil companies...I blame our society/government for not forcing the infrastructure changes to make us more energy independent decades ago.  As long as the oil business makes the profits it does, it will have a stranglehold on our policies....they simply have the money to have incredible influence on our government...thats just business and all businesses that can bend policy to their will, will do so where the opportunity exists. Thats the way it is and we all know it....unfortunately the public is not quite at the point where we are all incensed enough to be marching up and down the streets and effect any change.  But I will tell you that $6.00 a gallon milk is getting me pretty darned upset!!!

Regards
Tommy

There is such a thing as killing the golden goose. They may make record profits now, but they are killing their goose.
Parent - - By Root Pass (***) Date 03-04-2008 13:09
There is a big differance between profit and profit margin. The money oil companies pay in taxes is more than 90% of most countries GDP.  Drill ANWR and off the cost of FL.
Parent - - By DaveBoyer (*****) Date 03-05-2008 06:15
While I think that conservation is a good idea, I think that NOT USING the RESOURCES WE HAVE is JUST STUPID.
Parent - - By js55 (*****) Date 04-02-2008 16:50
Blaming the oil companies is hilarious. They don't have to do anything as long as WE keep re-electing congressmen that vote to prohibit alternatives.
And doesn't it seem strange that the congressmen who vote to block alternatives (except of course those that require government subsidies) are the very same that are squeelin about Global Warming.
Wonder whats up with that?
If you're one of those supporting those congressmen , do us all a favor, and bend over at the pump for all of us. Because apparently its not that traumatic for you.
