Hi,

I read recently that mild steel rods for oxy-acetlene should not be used for TIG welding, could somebody tell me why!

Thanks, Matthew

I believe the oxy-fuel filler rods are not deoxidized to the extent required for GTAW.

You will have a greater chance of experiencing sputtering and porosity if you attempt GTAW with oxy-fuel filler.

Hello mattinker, As usual, Lawrence is spot on with his to-the-point explanation, one small additional consideration when comparing the two different filler rods might also include tensile strength differences, generally RG45 (oxy/fuel) filler rod, has a strength rating of 45,000, ER70S-2 or 3 or 6 (GTAW) filler rod, has a strength rating of 70,000. My $.02. Best regards, aevald

Although I've been welding (ark and oxy-acetylene) for the last thirty five years, I'm new to GTAW . Last week I bought myself an SAF nertabloc 250 TIG. So now I've got to get myself some rods together! As I've got a stock of gas rods I was wondering about using them hence my question.

Thanks for your reply, Matthew
