In notes c of the pre-qualified weld, the comment of position fix to horizontal for cyclic load application.

Does anyone known how AWS defines cyclic load?

Thanks

I think that the AWS leaves that as an Engineering responsibility / decision.  See AWS D1.1 section 2 (Part "C") for more detailed decription of limitations and allowable stresses.

Cyclic loaded structures have movement due to impact, waves, wind gusts and strong earthquakes.  As Bill said, it's up to the EOR to specify in the contract documents whether the structure is cyclic or static because cyclic structures have more restrictions than static.  I have yet to see a spec. where the EOR has specified this.  If this is your case, you have two options.  Treat the structure as cyclic and proceed accordingly, or contact the EOR and ask.

If you type cyclic in the search feature you will find a good thread on 2/25/08. " How to determine if a load is static or cyclic."
