I am getting ready for my first pipe test in 2 weeks and have been welding the heck out of 12 inch coupons. I have been told to use a 3/16 gap and a nickel land. This is working for me but would appreciate any more tips. Is this the right gap?

I would say a 3/32 gap is probably going to work better for you. 3/16 is a pretty good sized gap to fill.

if you are going to tig the root and have a 3/16 gap the you better turn the heat down and back feed it. if you are oing to stick it I would use a 3/32  gap with nickel landing but thats me good luck

jeff parker said it.

You probably mean 3/32 gap. That's about right for downhill stick welding. I tend to use a bigger gap and bigger land so I can really stick it in there.
