Up Topic American Welding Society Services / Technical Standards & Publications / Definition of "Back Up Weld" on CJP Tubular K Joint?
- - By William J. Hall Date 05-05-2008 19:08
I am running PEQ (performance evaluation qulification) test for PaDot under D1.1:2000.  The joint required is a CJP Tubular K connection, standard flat profiles for limited thickness.  Fig 3.8 transition C to D shows an area past the root as "Back Up Weld"  It is not dimensioned.  We are able to exceed tw @ w but the "Back Up Weld" does not end up flush on the id.  This weld is a 3" pipe @ 45 deg. welded to a 10" pipe.   I searched through A3.0 and it did not define "Back Up Weld".  Has anyone used this joint design or qualified it.  Or can anyone define "Back Up Weld".

If you have a D1.1 2000, the definition is shown in Annex B on page 279.  It basically serves as a backing weld for additional weld passes.

John,

If you type slower than me, I feel sorry for you.  I only use my left forefinger when I type.

Take a quick look @ page 279 (bottom right) in Annex b of D1.1:2000....I think that is the definition that you are looking for.
