have a sa200 that will idle ok-as soon as you come off idle it goes to missing all the way to high speed and keeps on missing. checked valve setting, valve springs, timing, mag, carb, compression, plugs, wires. what could cause this?  thanks-hope someone knows. Jp

Do these carbs have idle & high speed jets? If so perhaps the high speed jet is clogged. Be sure You have the proper gap at the points too.

Once it got up to a constant RPM did it stop missing?

no it does not stop missing, changed carb, and mag.,good idle miss above idle to top speed&dont stop

Hello jlp, one quick thing, if you have another coil laying around try swapping it out. Sometimes a coil will have enough spark to run fairly decently at lower rpms but won't work when you start bring up the r's. Just another thought. Best regards, aevald.

You're probably getting some arcing going on inbetween the coil and plugs.  Is there water or oil around where the plugs go into the head?  At night have someone run a rod for you while you check for arcing.  It sounds like your grounding out somewhere while under a load.  Check your plug cap, make sure they're snapped in good.  I've seen arcing come right through a rubber boot before.  That was on a MSD digital setup though so it was cranking some voltage.

While it is running and missing remove 1 plug wire at a time and that should tell you if the problem is in the ignition.

Look inside the mag cap for "carbon trails" this is a deposit of conductive material, looks like a pencil line, that can cause high voltage to leak off to ground. It takes more voltage to jump the plug gap when You open the throttle, making voltage leakage more likely.

If You have recently had any cooling system leakage, the antifreze residue makes high voltage leakage a serious problem. In this case wash the mag cap and plug wires in strong detergent and dry thoroughly.

Condensor. I had the same problem. Purr like a kitten at idle, barely run when the throttle was opened.
