All right folks. I have a very serious question that I need your input on. :) How does the diamond system work. I'm referring to the diamond next to your name. What do the diamonds mean and how to they increase? Is it by the number of posts?

Just curious.

Jim

Hello Jim, and yes it is by the number of posts. I don't exactly remember the "number to star ratio", but that is all that it signifies, nothing else. Best regards, Allan

Allan,
Thanks for the info. I noticed that some people have 2 with less than 200 posts and some people have 3 with less than 300 post, so I was not sure how it worked.

I noticed your from Washington state. What city? I was born and raised in the Tri-Cities.

Jim

I think it is a star for every 50 posts.
Parent - By CWI555 (*****) Date 05-14-2008 12:26
I think it's bit more than 50. Aevald should have 32 stars by that count.
Parent - - By Kix (****) Date 05-14-2008 12:27
I don't think it's a diamond for every 50 posts because I've been sitting on 3 diamonds for a few hundred posts now. I do believe it is by benchmark posts though. Like, when someone gets to 1000 posts , maybe they'll get 4 diamonds.

I'm still a chunk of coal!

My hat's off (watch out for the glare) to John Wright with 5 diamonds. I can remember welcoming him to the forum after I had already been in it for a while - I'm still only 4 diamonds with 1300 and something posts. He must be some sort of a chatterbox with nothing to do all day :)
Parent - By jwright650 (*****) Date 05-19-2008 11:29
Hey...I resemble that comment!.....LOL Chet you have always been one of the forum's seniors that I look up to and go to when I need some help(<---how's that for a jab back atcha?).....LOL
Parent - - By jwright650 (*****) Date 05-19-2008 11:48
Chet, maybe we can get ross to write "six diamonds @ 5000 posts" into the software so I'll have another lofty goal to shoot for (Bwhahahahaha!) since I sit around with nothing to do all day but be a chatterbox....ROFLMBO!!!!
Parent - By CHGuilford (****) Date 05-19-2008 13:08
So how does one go about getting a job like yours anyway? You know - get paid $2500 per week to sip coffee and surf the net all day?
Parent - - By CHGuilford (****) Date 05-19-2008 13:11
Hey, that's neat trick John! Just cut the message into smaller segments and get all those extra "points" for it.

Wow I never knew I had that many. Are they negotiable?????
Parent - - By Stephan (***) Date 05-19-2008 15:51
Ron,

I devotionally pursue this thread and I hope you don't mind.

But this post was... superb! :-)

Best regards,
Stephan

Thank you Stephan, I see I only need 193 scratch that 192 more post to earn another Diamond. Back when this Forum first started I used it very extensively as a learning platform and actually have received monetary rewards in the form of wage advances.

I took advantage of the abundance (wealth) of knowledge available and made good use of it. I am extremely grateful to all of the people who took time to answer my questions and tutor me along, to many to list. I owe a lot to you all, you included Stephan although some of post are so technical I have to read them with a dictionary, Physic's and Metallurgy book in hand .

I still have a great many questions but my approach has changed since this Forum has become so popular there are many others to post the questions and I have only to follow a long and read with out the need to post.

All though I said it in jest IMHO the Diamonds are very negotiable or at least they have been for me. Every Diamond by my name represents a rung in a ladder leading up to the $2,500 sipping coffee and surfing web. I got a away's to go yet for that.
Parent - By jrw159 (*****) Date 05-19-2008 17:12
I now understand your use of "Negotiable" and in that sense, they sure can be.
Parent - - By Stephan (***) Date 05-19-2008 17:22
Wow!

Ron, you're honoring me so much more than I deserve!

Thank you so much!

You won't believe how much this forum and all its appreciated members mean to me*!

Hopefully I will have the pleasure to read many many of your posts in the future!! :-)

All the best regards to you,
Stephan

* My beloved wife can truly confirm this... :-)

Stephan,

I have read many of your posts, You can have one of my stars! That way I won't feel bad when I read your posts that by far exceed my knowledge level.

I appreciate you posts and many others here.

Gerald!

I wouldn't have even 1 if I wouldn't have learned from you!! :-):-)

Thanks a lot and very best regards,
Stephan

I mean NO disrespect to ANYONE on this forum from a "No diamond" newbee to some of the long time "Five Diamond" members when I say this.

Negotiable? Probably not, since, IMHO, they do not mean squat, except in ones own mind. All it signifies is how many times one has posted.

I have been a member of this forum for a very short period of time. I have three diamonds.

Do I have three diamonds worth of informative and helpfull posts? Absolutly NOT.

Do I care? Absolutly NOT.

Again IMHO, some people put way to much stock into these diamonds compared to what, at this point in time, they actually signify.

jrw159 :-)

I had the number of posts BEFORE there was ever a rating system...I just like participating and helping where I can. There are so many posts these days that I spend more time reading than I have time to reply. There seems to be a pretty knowledgeable group here lately and rarely do I have anything further to add to what has already been posted.

John,
"I just like participating and helping where I can. There are so many posts these days that I spend more time reading than I have time to reply."

I feel the same way.FWIW

S'OK John. (I think he's jealous of you :) )
Parent - By CHGuilford (****) Date 05-20-2008 16:12
Speaking more seriously now - the diamonds are nice but not imperative to have. The real value in the forum is the members. That is the knowledge that everyone shares freely and openly. Second but equally important is that everyone demonstrates respect for others. There is some joking and ribbing but no one means anything by it.
These things keep the forum in top place, in my opinion of course.
Parent - - By Stephan (***) Date 05-19-2008 17:11
John,

even though I don't know if it might be a "mistake" to write...

When I have read your last posts, I felt reminded on a similar discussion been conducted a time ago, see also:

http://www.aws.org/cgi-bin/mwf/topic_show.pl?pid=68223#pid68223

As I am a proud - but being both a foreign + a short-term(!) - member of even this BEST welding forum in the world, I have never had a look upon how many diamonds... oh, I must apologize, this is not true, since when I started, I was interested even as well as the initiator of this thread, how the "diamond" system may work and to be honest, yes, I was proud at that time to having received my tenth diamond, but however, the only thing what has ever counted for me was the opportunity to talk to all these fantastic welding experts and great fellows here in the forum!

And as I said recently, I would never barter one only second of all this what I have experienced here over the course of time. To be honest, I have created the one or two - unwanted(!) - "misunderstandings" when I have started to participate in the forums. But truly, I have learned my lessons well and today I thank everybody - one of the very greatest ones has unfortunately passed away from us much too early - who has kindly taught me that time some very fundamental and valuable things which I will never forget again, and all those ones who have encouraged me to continue my attendance here in the forum.

And to say the least, here are some of the greatest people in welding I have ever had the honor to talk to, although to the most of them just virtually, except to two of those as well personally :-) :-).

And some of these great people have of course participated in the forum long times before I was even a "member" and (to cite Ross) have generously shared their enormous experience and wisdom with the welding world. As a kind of appreciation they have earned the "diamonds" which is a kind of "due" for an actually invaluable gift.

But... in my very own personal interpretation, no one of those great ones would have ever hesitated only one second to share even their expertise with those ones who are seeking help, (as I am often even one of those) even as they would have known that no diamonds would have been the "due" for their generous work. I am sure!

I would like to attend much more the forum but often the daily job doesn't permit to do so - unfortunately*!

Thus, in regard to the diamonds, I am just a chunk of coal - as an appreciated colleague said so in one of his posts - and I am sure to probably never reach those "heights of glory" some others - justifyable - have reached, but however, and here I agree with you, I do not care, since every single time I had a look into this great welding forum I have learned more than a thousand of books might ever have taught me.

This is the truth and I swear, I thank all these great women and men here in the forums as well as in the background (AWS) - making this forum work - heartfelt for allowing me to be an accepted member of their chosen community!

For me it's a true honor!

Best regards,
Stephan

* If some of you wonder why I am continuously "online" today, I have a day of vacation :-)

Stephan,
"I am just a chunk of coal"

That makes at least two of us, and no matter how many "diamonds I achieve" I always will be a chunk of coal amongst diamonds.

Thank you for the words of wisdom and the reminders that we are ALL valuable to this forum in some way or another.

John

Stephan,

I now step to the side...

It appears that you now have six , yes six stars to your credit and have now surpassed me, so I humbly and graciously hand off the "post postitute" crown to you.......LOL
Congrats to your new found fame, enjoy!

Jim,
As stated already the stars are awarded for number of posts.

Now if I recall correctly,
at 10 posts you get one diamond,
at 50 you get two diamonds,
at 250 you get three diamonds,
at 1000 you get four diamonds,
and then at 3000 you get five diamonds.

Hopefully Ross will correct me if I didn't remember that correctly.

edited 3 diamond count

Sounds right to me.
Parent - - By ross (***) Date 05-14-2008 17:04
It's 10*, 50**, 250***, 1000****, then 3000*****. I can change the levels if anybody has a better scheme.
