I have been practicing my 6G for about 5 months now at school using 5P downhill root and hot pass with 7018 cap. A guy gave me 2 boxes of 6013 which i have been trying to use at home in place of 6010. I am using a miller xmt 302, but i am having trouble with the 6013 sticking and just not preforming on my root pass. What is the difference between 6010 and 6013? I am running about 100 amps on the root with 5p but with 6013 it just wants to stick. what am I doing wrong?

6010 & 6013 ar not interchangeable, about all they have in common is that they are both welding rods. 6010's penetrate deep & freeze fast, 6013's don't do either. They handle entirely differently.

Well im glad to hear that. Thanks for the info Dave, I was beginning to think there was something wrong with my machine. I'm new to pipe welding but I could defiantly tell a difference between the two. So what is 6013 good for? structural?

There is a thread about which polarity to use for 6013 rods, there are a lot of pictures of pipe welded with it there. I don't weld piplines, I have used 6013 when I don't want deep penetration, an example being thin [18ga-16ga] sheet metal.

Hello cole, they are substantially different rods, E6010 and E6011 electrodes will act similarly, but the E6010 is for DC use only and the E6011 electrode can be used on either AC or DC current. The E6013 can be run on either AC or DC current as well, but will run considerably differently. It is great that you got this rod from someone, yet it won't provide you with the same sort of practicing experience that you are receiving at school. Especially for practicing root passes. The flux make-up of the two rods is completely different and the penetration and bead characteristics are not the same. Save the E6013 for something else. E6010 and E6011 are deep-penetrating, fast freezing electrodes, E6013 is a shallow-penetration fast freezing electrode with a full-coverage slag. Best regards, aevald

Thanks for the info guys. I guess I just need to buy a box of 5P, I was trying to save some money and use 6013 because I got it free but as I stated earlier it's just not the same as 5P. Im new to pipe welding it seems like I learn something new everyday.

Hello cole, the learning should never stop, the rate at which you forget things is where you have to start becoming concerned. I would venture to say you've got plenty of years before you'll start experiencing that. Best regards, Allan

I would put the 13 more in the same ball park as a 7018 as far as practice. I personaly don't like the 6013. If you want to burn them turn the heat up and use a short arc and watch your puddle closely. When you see a swirling like a whirlpool, stop, because you have a slag entrapment and it is very difficult (at least to me) to get it to burn out withour stopping and grinding it out.
But like everyone said, don't practice this rod in place of 6010. You might use it for your filler and cap practice if the test calls for 7018 in those passes.
