Up Topic Welding Industry / General Welding Discussion / any rig welders doing re-entries into old wells???

I was just curious if any of you rig welders here are doing any re-entry welding, we call it re-entries here in Canada, you fellas might call it something else re-activation etc... In particular I was wondering how you guys initially cut into the casing i.e; hot tap, drill hole with air drill, cut into with torch etc... Back when I first started welding in the oilfield, I worked for a fellow who was much less than logical, and we just drilled a hole in the casing with an ELECTRIC drill, bled off the gas and threw a burning rag into the hole, and started cutting into the casing.  Knowing what I know now about downhole problems and pressures, I could have caused a blowout by my ill informed actions, just wondering what experiences you guys may have had with this type of work.
