Can anyone explain what "full-depth partial pentration" is ? This is specified in FEMA 350 for seismic moment connection weld although the symbol shows it as a CJP weld with a reinforcing fillet. Thanx!!

if you are referring to figure 3.8 and 3.11 then i think it is a partial pen weld that is detailed as full depth/thickness but not considered a cjp. This will change some code requirements for that weld.

There is no reference to D1.1 (this is FEMA 350), but it's per Fig. 3.3 , Joint BTC-P4, except instead of showing depth of partial pen weld, a note says "full-depth partial penetration from far side" ! Anyway I am treating it as a full pen weld. Thanks.

Thanks again...yes I checked it against FEMA 350. After back-gouging, a couple of such welds in the field were found to only have 3/16"  penetration (on a 3/8" plate). The contractor is fixing all welds.

that seems difficult to do with proper bevel prep
