Table 4.8 in AWS D1.1:2000 shows (as I have always utilized) that after qualifying in the 1G position, the welder is also qualified to weld in the 1F and 2F position. Table 3.5 in AWS B2.1:1998 and Table 15.7 in the new AWS Welding Handbook Vol. 1 "Welding Science and Technology" show that qualifying in 1G only qualifies to weld in the 1F position. What's up with that?!

I would guess it is another typo. I noticed some discrepancies there in relation to ASME Sec IX requirements.

Kinda makes you wonder how much care is put into the CWI test questions.

Have a good day and share it

I think AWS B2.1-98 covers various objects including steel structure(AWS D1.1).

In AWS D1.1, 2F welding may be considered easy welding position.

Generally 2F position is more difficult than 1F position and following points should be check during procedure or performance test;
1) smooth bead
2) enough root penetration

Some welding consumables are designed for 2F position only.
Metal cored flux cored wire(AWS E70T-1) is used for shipbuilding and bridge box girder in a great quantity in my country. 2F position is more than 50% of total welding length for one ship welding.

These are the reasons why AWS B2.1 requires separate test for 2F position.

My reference earlier to a difference in the code and the new welding handbook is indicated in table 15.1 where it is indicated that deletion of backing as an essential variable. My ASME Sec IX indicates this as a non-essential variable.

I only have the 99 addenda so maybe it is I that am incorrect.

Good Day
