We started using this horrible ceramic back up tape to weld 316 stainless 12 to 10ga head/shell seams at work as opposed to the old fashion way of welding inside, back grinding/short arc outside for 100% penetration.  Most of the finishes need to be sanatery on the inside and this tape really makes the weld rock hard, grinders hate it.  Does anybody have any alternitive products or methods that may help this process?

Purge it may be an option in addition with the backup tape if needed. It just depends upon the configuration of your product.

Try different abrasive wheels and grind it when it's hot.;-) j/k   But seriously, try a new abrasive.  They got all kinds of new technology in that area these days.

Sand paper discs (soft pads) work really well in the removal of the tape residue. That's what we use and it takes it right off.

Maybe you are already doing this....can you put your tape on the outside so you weld the inside first?

these are amazing but depending on the size of your job may be cost prohibitive
