I recently received my CWI last year and was wondering where I would would get my stamp? Also, if there there was a time limit in which to start inspecting?

Contact AWS @ 1-800-443-9353, ask for certification department.  Stamps are available for PURCHASE... cant remember the price.  Once you are certified there is no time limit to begin inspecting.

Did you lose the stamp provided upon certification?

There is no time limit on when you can start. But I will say that you better use it or lose it. You must show one out of three years utilizing this cert or you will have to retest at three years rather than renew.

EDIT for correct info.

I thought you had to retest regardless after three years?

Kix,
No. All that is required at the three and six year mark is an eye test, renewal fee and documentation of work history to show at a minimum two out of three years inspection, if memory serves me correctly.

And I am quite sure that if my memory has failed me, or I have left something out, someone will quickly step in and bring us up to speed. :-)

John

BTW- Things have change quite a bit since I aquired my CWI, but if I remember correctly, the CWI stamp arrived in the mail shortly after the test results, cert. and card. I do not remember there being any extra charge for the initial stamp, but a charge will apply for a replacement.

I also remember something about the stamp being metal in the old days, rather than the plastic used now. But that is another subject.

so they don't send a new stamp at renewal time? for 500 fricken bucks, you'd think they could kick me a 3 dollar stamp...

I do not know about renewal. When I had my three year mark I still had life left in my original, and never pursued another one. Maybe I got the shaft on one. I would agree that it should be issued upon renewal.

Any of the big guys have an answer on the renewal part?

BTW I THINK the cost was about $20 for a replacement when I certified.

Well, I got one of those fold-out kind, I liked it, till the little woman ran it thru the laundry.  And the bottle of replacement ink I got just doesn't have the same 'pop', visually.

do you mean the handle on the round housing folds out?
Parent - - By Duke (***) Date 06-05-2008 00:07
No, its shaped lengthwise, and opens up like a clamshell, inkpad on one side, stamp part hinges down and forms a triangle.  Real handy to carry in pocket.  About the size of a computer thumb drive.

oh, and it has an expiration date
Parent - By ctacker (****) Date 06-07-2008 12:16
The stamps today have an expiration date, same time as when your cert expires. So AWS would have to send you a new stamp upon renewal.

I just received a email with my 3yr renewal verification. It says a new certificate, wallet card, and stamp will follow within 60 days. So must get a new stamp upon renewal.

Hello John, thanks for that nugget of info. I knew that you had to pay AWS every 3 years and retest after 9 unless you had the required educational credit hours.
I didn't know that you had to prove employment as CWI or similar position for 2 out of 3 years.
I must of been daydreaming about all those classic cars in our seminar.

I utilize the cert as needed in our business so I'm not worried but I'm not full time CWI. Maybe one day. I probably should research the documentation of work history issue to be sure that I won't have to test every 3 years. As a partner in a small company I handle all things related to CWI work so documentation would be more difficult to verify by AWS being self employed.  Haven't been in 3 years so haven't had to renew yet. Your post got me curious about the proof thing. Thanks

swsweld,
Anytime partner. I think AWS looks at this the same as a welder cert. If you do not use the process, you can lose your "edge" so to speak.
