I was looking into buying a SMAW machine and the cheapest i could find was 550 bucks and it only puts out 180 amps i was wandering if this amperage would be high enough for me to learn how to pipe weld on

I am sure a person could get the basics out of most any machine. Endless practice and better equipment will hone your skills.

you can... weld it up, cut the straps , bend em. You will know when you are on the right path.

Just buy a Miller thunderbolt AC/DC 225 or a Lincoln 200 AMP machine.  You can find them for cheap on EBAY used.  I sold my like new thunderbolt 225 for 250$  You'll need a 220 outlet somwhere though.  I think you can run those 180 amp machines off of 110 for a little while anyway and you won't get all of the 180 amps.;-)

I suggest You buy a used light industrial AC-DC machine from Craigs List or eBay. A lincoln Idealarc 250 or Miller Dialarc 250 would be good choices, and in the same price range or less.
