Is it possible to use a prequalified WPS where CVN values are needed? (D1.1 2006, 4.35.3 says when CVN testing is a req. and a QUALIFIED WPS exists which satisfies all requirements except for CVN testing, it shall be necessary only to prepare an additional test weldment with sufficient material to provide the CVN test specimens.)
does the word QUALIFIED mean I need to qualify the WPS or would preQUALIFIED be a qualified WPS?

EDIT: since my parts need PWHT  I cannot prequalify the PWHT (section 3.14 item3) is it still possible to write a prequalified WPS and weld a sample, send to PWHT, do the CVN and be good?

also, can someone explain to me the meaning of table 4.6 item 12? if I run a groove pqr 1" plate (multipass) and want to run fillets (single and multipass) do i need to run a single pass groove PQR and multipass groove PQR?

Under the aspices of D1.1, I don't believe you can weld a test piece following a prequalified WPS with no testing other than the Charpy impact test. I believe you have to qualify the welding procedure and include the supplementary varibles per Table 4.6. A WPS qualified for notch toughness is usually more restrictive than a WPS that isn't qualified for notch toughness.

Thanks Al, I was hoping but not betting on that, also, on table 4.2 note d says a groove will qualify for any size fillet or PJP groove weld, so If I'm welding only fillets, I can weld a 3/8 groove and be good for any size fillet?

It might be difficult to get all your impact samples from the 3/8 test plate.
