I've got a spec that says "Fit up gaps blah blah blah (same as section 5.22 D1.1 2006) but adds "Fit up gaps exceeding 3/16 inch require the use of a shim to fill the gap, as defined in AWS D1.1"

Can someone point me in the direction where I can find that defined in D1.1?

I think 5.22 in D1.1 2006 pretty much explains it. If you want more detail on the backing and such, 5.10 has that info.

I still dont see where D1.1 says anything about shims to fill gaps!

I wonder if they are getting confused with Section 2.10 - Filler Plates?

I wondered the same thing, I cannot find anything about shims used for gaps!, next time I talk to their Engineer, I will ask him what he meant!

Hey ctacker-

Now that I read into it more, I agree with you, I don't see anywhere that mentions "shims". At first I was thinking along the lines of perhaps a consumable insert, and like CHGuilford mentiond, could be a filler plate, but that doesn't really sound right either.

Let me know what you find out. I'd be interested to know myself.

Sounds like you need to get clarification from the EOR.  A shim is furnished for use during erection to fill spaces that may or may not be present because of the required field assembly clearances.  A filler is furnished to occupy spaces that will be present because of dimensional separations between elements of a connection.

They probably mean "filler plate".  "Shim" gets used colloquially to mean that all that time.

Once again, terms and definitions raises it's ugly head.
