Up Topic American Welding Society Services / Certifications / ASME Section IX for Part III of the CWI Exam

I'm preparing to take the CWI exam in the near future.  I am currently working in a package boiler plant and spend almost 100% of my time working with ASME Section IX -QW.  I would like to certify on part three of the CWI exam on this code.  AWS's literature states that ASME Section IX is a valid choice for part three (also includes B31.1 and B31.3 Piping Codes).  I have several concerns:  (1) ASME Section IX is not offered on the fifth day of the seminar; (2)  I know little about the Brazing portion-QB of the code and I'm afraid there will be a lot of the brazing portion on the test; I also have some concerns about the amount of questions from B31.1 and B31.3 included in the test.  If anyone has used ASME Section IX as their choice for the code portion of the test please let me know what you think.

I've passed the Section IX, B31.1 and B31.3 exams. They are structured similar to the D1.1, D1.5, or API 1104. You will be asked a question and you will have to find the information, text or data, in the applicable code section. You need to be familiar with how the code section is "constructed" meaning you need to know what article or chapter contains the information you are seeking.

The CWI questions do not require "interpretive" answers. The goal of the examination is to verify you know the layout of the code to the extent you can look up answers quickly and accurately. There are sufficient numbers of questions you will not have enough time to finish the examination if you are unfamiliar with the code.

Best regards - Al

When did AWS begin to offer ASME section IX as the code portion of the test? When I took mine in 2002 you had to choose between D 1.1 or API 1104. I always wondered why they didn't include section IX. Up here in the northeast you I see section IX being used far more than 1104

I am pretty sure they just started testing to those other codes recently.  I took the test in early 2007 and had only the choice of d1.1 or 1104.

i thought that there were options other than D1.1 and 1104 available for 10+ years.

I tested in 03 and if memory serves me correctly the only options were D1.1 and API 1104.

However this would not be the first time my memory failed me. :-)

When I took it in 89/90 they had Sec IX and B31.1. And Sec IX and Sec VIII. I expired after 9 years and when I took it again, there was no Sec IX/B31.

Soemone on the Certification committee may have some trivia for us regarding the various changes to what codes were available and why/why not.

There was 1689 or 1688 (89 probably) and Mil Std 248. Those were actually the ones I was most familar with at the time but didn't know how to get a copy.
