Parent - - By KSellon (****) Date 07-12-2008 18:39
when you say drum are you speaking of the generator housing, exciter bracket, main armature and exciter armature??? Give me a call. I have several in stock. Round barrels off of 200's and 300's and a handful of armatures. I'm tried of hording the stuff. Let me know what you want and I'll shoot you one heck of a deal.

Well this is what is going on,I have a good engine but my shunt coils are bad.  It is probably easier to find a complete working housing than to replace shunt coils. So yes I am interested were are you located?
Parent - - By KSellon (****) Date 07-14-2008 13:03
Oklahoma City. If you are close you can order a set of shunt field coils from Hybriweld for around $260, then Industrial Machine will press out the old coils and press in the new for $100
Parent - - By pearl welding (*) Date 07-16-2008 23:53
I am in dayton ohio. I think there is a shop tha will press in my coils local. How big of a job is it and is there anything i should check?
Parent - - By KSellon (****) Date 07-17-2008 14:02
Are you sure its shunt field coils and not a broken or mouse chewed wire?

It takes our shop (with all the right tools) about 3 hours. Downhand and Chris have disassembled their machines so you can ask them how long it took them. You have to start by removing the fuel tank and control panel. Then you remove the exciter armature and bracket (be sure to pull the main brushes out of their holders before removing the exciter bracket. Then you pull the generator housing off the backing plate. The coils you need to replace are at 7 and 1 o'clock, they come in sets. When you reassemble always put a new bearing on the armature.

I did alot of troubleshooting and reading on this forum and i took the machine to a electric shop and it sounds like shunt coils.I did find a mouse carcas in the housing. The electric shop said the coils were shorted out.  My results were that they were open.
Parent - By KSellon (****) Date 07-17-2008 21:45
open= 0   shorted=26 ohms   good =41ohms

It took me maybe a week or maybe 2 well I could only work on it on weekend but to break down just the generator and motor I'd say maybe a day and a half two days it took me. I really took my time took a paint marker and marked every wire took pictures so I could put it back together later. I wasn't in a rush like Kaye told me take my time and well I really really did. but I think a weekend you could break it all down going none stop at it. The hardest thing for me was getting the exciter houseing off the the bearing and shaft I did it in a way I don't recomend you to do it but it worked for me and YES REPLACE the bearing mine spun but wasn't that smooth I replaced it anyway. If my shunt coils were bad I'd send the entire drum part to Kaye or if Hybriweld did it I'd maybe let them replace it but if shipping wasn't bad it would go to Kaye. I'm not confident enough to do all that and the wireing no way but like i said a entire weekend should get it taken apart if you have all the right tools
Parent - - By pearl welding (*) Date 07-18-2008 09:19
do i need any special tools? Shipping cost might be to high. There is a shop local that they say can press those in but i dont know if they are set up for it. Does anyone know a place close to ohio that does that kind of work?
Parent - - By KSellon (****) Date 07-18-2008 14:36
freight for the generator housing would run around $90 with a freight line. If you can't find anyone local send it to Hybriweld. You'd be cutting out the middle man, because I buy all my coils from Hybriweld. The quality they produce is twice as good as Lincoln.
Parent - - By pearl welding (*) Date 07-19-2008 18:06
OK so I remove exiter and bracket and main armature. Remove housing ship it to hybriweld and they will remove old shunts and replace with new.And who do I talk to over at hybriweld?    I want to thank you and everyone who has helped me. It is tough to find anyplace around here that will work one these type of units.
Parent - - By KSellon (****) Date 07-19-2008 18:36
you don't have to pull the main armature.

remove control panel, leaving as many wires as possible connected to it (mark them)
remove exciter brushholders
remove nut, washer and wedge
remove exciter armature

pull the main brushes out of their holders
unbolt bracket from housing
with a 2 arm 18" puller remove the exciter bracket from the generator housing
remove the oil bath and starter
remove bottom bolts of generator housing to backing plate
put 2x4 under lip of oil pan to hold up engine
remove remaining bolts
knock housing with a hammer to help release hosing from lip on backing plate
use a chain wound around the feet of the housing and a chain hoist to slowly and carefully pull the generator housing off of the main armature

whalla!!!!!!!!

haha I just sent him what you typed to me Kaye a long time ago about dismantling this thing see I'm to dang slow at typeing LOL

The hardest thing for me was finding a puller that dang big so I rigged up a bottle jack and a chain with two hooks that attach to the exciter houseing but look for a puller if you can rent one a new one is about 800 dollars

BTW I just heard from S.W. and he has a heck of a find that he is going to contact you about. Lucky guy that he is. I almost fell over when I read his message.

Parent - - By pearl welding (*) Date 07-19-2008 18:12
I will get some prices, but how much would you charge me for a housing with new shunts or ones that work delivered to dayton ohio 45414?
Parent - By KSellon (****) Date 07-19-2008 18:43
I need your code number, or atleast need to know if you have a high or low mount starter. No use in me shipping you a housing if you are going to have to disassemble your machine anyway. Just get ahold of Hybriweld for a set of shunt field coils. Like I said shipping for you complete housing via motor freight should run around $90. Call Hybriweld and see if they can arrange pick up of your housing at a discounted rate and have them do the work for you.

Micheal, Shawn or Tom all of the Hybriweld crew ROCK in my book

I think Kaye uses a 13 inch 2 jaw puller but I Ghetto riged a bottle jack and a chain to pull the exciter houseing off and it worked well only because I think this welder had been taken apart before now if it was never apart I don't know if it would come apart that easy.

Thanks Kaye if I ever needs coils I'll have hybriweld do it for me, there about a 2 hour drive from me..still with gas going up hell it would still be cheaper to ship it.

Parent - - By alweldor Date 07-19-2008 02:43
Last summer I had to replace the shunts in my machine. After breaking it down as described I took the generator housing to a local Red-D-Arc rental yard. I can't speak for all their locations, but the one here has a repair shop. For $65.00 they pressed out the old shunts, cleaned out the housing, pressed in the new shunts that I provided, and primed the inside of the housing. The machine shop recommended by the gentleman who was helping me tear down my machine wanted $400.00 for the press work.
Parent - - By pearl welding (*) Date 07-19-2008 18:10
was it a special kind of press?
Parent - By KSellon (****) Date 07-19-2008 18:39
not a special press just need to be set up for it. The coils are on an iron core and the iron core is dovetailed into the housing. You can sit there with a hammer if you'd like and knock it out, but I don't like to sweat that much.
Parent - By jkin (**) Date 07-19-2008 20:01
Most machine shops will have a press big enough to pres out and reinstall your fields, The whle job for someone who knows what there doing probably 3 hours, if not maybe half days work. K's right buy from hybriweld way better fields than lincoln
