Up Topic Welding Industry / Inspection & Qualification / UT Question: stainless versus carbon steeel
- - By Bill M (***) Date 07-15-2008 14:26
We do only carbon steel work...however were discussing UT of stainless steel and a question came up since we do not have a stainless cal block or an AWS code book

we have AWS D1.1  (for carbon steel )
we do not have AWS D1.6 or stainless steel

The questions that came up are:

Is the accept / reject criteria like in Table 6.2/6.3 in D1.1 (dB ranking) the same in D1.6?
Does a UT unit that is calibrated for distance and sensitivity with a steel IIW block, require much adjustment when the transducer is moved to the S/Steel block?
Does the dB reference level change off the .060" hole carbon steel to s/steel?
thanks-

Bill,
First you need to perform UT to AWS D1 to your written procedure. This needs to be written to cover SS if that is your intent. Secondly, per D1.6 6.17 (99) cal block shall be same base metal and heat treat as material in production. Next, D1.6 uses a dac curve and weld discontinuity characterization (spherical, cylindrical, or planer). Welds are also set into classes static, cyclical, class R, and class X like D1.1. hope this is what you were looking for.
