I am looking for any info that anyone might have in regards to weld penetration etching chemicals. I would like to know what you have found to work the best on mild steel, stainless steel and aluminum. What mixture or ratios and any good suppliers to purchase these from. I have heard that it is difficult to obtain certain types of acid. Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

Get yourself a Lincoln  Procedure Handbook of Arc Welding ( most of your local Lincoln reps will give you one if you ask ) it has all the etchant solutions listed for various steels, aluminum and stainless.

Or lay your hands on an ASME IX, formulas are in the back for many alloys.

ASME IX QW 470 Etching

You can use the search feature and type in etching for some info if you don't have the code book.
