Hey guys, I am a Quality Assurance Manager for a Railroad associated company and in our standard AWS D15.1, paragraph 17.3.1.1. That welder qualification tests for manual and semiautomatic welding shall be as follows: (1) Groove weld qualification test for plate in accordance with 17.4. (2) Fillet weld qualification tests (only) in accordance with 17.6.1. Does this mean we have to do both groove and fillet? The guys here are only certified with groove, all positions.

I would think the groove weld qualification covers them for fillet welds. I don't have D15.1 but in D1.1 Table 4.10 if you are qualified for grooves then you are qualified for fillets. Note h refers you to 4.25 and 4.28.

4.25 Fillet welds for Non tubular Connections
Qualification of CJP groove welds shall qualify for fillet welds. However, where only fillet welds is required, see Table 4.11.

Unless there is a paragraph, table or note similar to the one in D1.1 I would say you have to qualify in both a groove and fillet test.

Your right SWSWELD. I did find a paragraph that states that the groove 4G position will qualify welders for flat, horizontal, and overhead fillet plate welding. I was concerned as we have several welders. Thank you for the input. I appreciate it.
