I've run into this a hundred times at least.

Steel cast hammer unions welded to mild steel pipe..........snap!

I went out on my 100 and 1st repair for this situation today. Most unions made today are cast. Make sure and preheat these things to at least 300f before welding them to mild steel. The welds that fuse these together snap like twigs without preheat and low hydrogen rod...............
