Up Topic American Welding Society Services / Technical Standards & Publications / What is this symbol???
- - By SammyShine (**) Date 09-25-2008 17:59
I wanted to paste it on here but can't.

It looks like an underlined >     U    But it's not a U the lines of the U are extended. Wnd there is a ______ under it.

I hate to sound dumb...but has anyone seen it before? If I can find out I will impress my boss (I'm not a welder)

Thanks!!

i would refer to the AWS A2.4, standard symbols for welding.

Is it a bracket? ]   [   ]  with a line in the center to resemble the letter E.

I would suggest looking at A2.4 also.....The description doesn't sound like anything I've seen before. Wish you could find a picture of it and post it for us.

Hello SammyShine, I would second the comments of the others to check the weld symbols chart, however if I have followed what you are saying I believe you are describing a U-groove weld groove description for a partial joint penetration butt weld. My $.02 worth. Best regards, aevald

It might be the symbol for Finishing Method Unspecified.

Welds to be finished approximately flush, flat, convex, or concave with the method unspecified shall be idicated by adding the letter "U" to the appropriate contour symbol.

AWS A2.4:2007 paragraph 5.12.3 page 19.

Is this what your looking at? edit: only other thing I can think of is this one.

I want to start off by saying thanks to all of you...You're so helpful.

The symbol is not a U...(I wish I knew how to attach a picture, I would)

It's like a U with long side...like a finger or half a popscicle stick and it is _____  underlined.

I will look at the standard you mentioned...I'll have to look at the post again.

I think we'll have to call the customer for clarification :-)

AGAIN THANKS TO ALL

and when I find out...I'll let you know.

Pretty sure it is the European convention or equivalent of weld arrow side/other side - (dashed line represents side to weld on)

Excellent information Jerry.

In this case, I would definitely go back to the customer. It looks like "designer" symbol. The detailer didn't find what he wanted in his reference book, so he made one up. Poor practice to say the least.

Best regards - Al

Looks more like a cattle brand than a welding symbol.

Can you post a pic of the entire symbol?  I'm wondering how the "U" is oriented with respect to the reference line (above or below).  Are the legs of the "U" in contact with the reference line?
Parent - - By SammyShine (**) Date 10-12-2008 16:25
Thanks for your reply. You can see the symbol. I attached it to my post daated 9-95-08.

Thanks

But that's not the "entire" symbol.  Please look at the sketch I posted and identify which side of the reference line it is on, and which way the "legs" of the U are facing.

OK, I will ask. This was the only info I was given.
Parent - - By SammyShine (**) Date 10-28-2008 18:39
Please see the sketch that I have included. I think that it may be a finishing symbol.

SammyShine,
This is a bevel on both sides with the other side to be finished to a flat contour in an unspecified manner.
