Can I get some clarification of D1.5 2002. I want to run a PQR for FCAW E71T-1 In the flat position. I came across 5.8.1 that states all welds that will be encountered in actual construction shall be classified as (1) flat, (2) horizontal, (3) vertical, or (4) overhead in conformance with the definitions of welding positions described in Figures. 5.4 and 5.5. Each WPS shall be tested in the position in which welding will be preformed in the work, except that test welds made in the flat positions qualify for flat and horizontal welding.

Dose that mean that I can write a horizontal groove weld procedure off my PQR that was done in the flat position?

Any help would be appreciated.

Yes.  You can use a flat PQR to qualfiy a horizontal groove WPS.  In D1.5-2008 they clarified that they only meant this for groove welds, not fillets.

Hg,
Just to clarify - are you saying D1.5-2008 does not provide for horizontal fillets to be qualified with a 1G plate test?  (I haven't had a chance to look at it.)

Thanks

You can use the 1G test plate, but you still need a horizontal rather than flat fillet weld soundness test.

OK - that's been our SOP anyway so that's a relief to hear.  Thank you.

Yeah, it was supposed to be a clarification, not a change in requirement.
