Can someone please fill me in on the purpose of a pancake hood?? Obviously, Im not a pipe welder but I've been trying to figure out whats the reason for them. Thanks!

Main thing for me is no reflections from the backside of lens - sun doesn't reflect back and distract - also small lightweight size.  Wendy's Pancakes are best I've seen / used and I have 2 of them along w/ a one piece original pancake hood... hope it helps

really nice for outdoors applications and indoors with lots of welders around to protect from their flash bouncing around in your hood.  People seem to either love them or hate em.  I use mine more than my speed lense hood,  seems like with the light reduction when I'm outside I can see good enough to start my arc.  I can't do that with the same shade lense in a regular hood

I gotta get me one. I've seen them, but never used one, being I don't do the pipeline thing. Still, looks to be a sweet hood & lightweight as well. :-) S.W.

we use to rivet a piece of soft leather to the backs of our hoods worked good just had to flip your hemet down a little harder but it kept the sunlight and sparkys off the back of your neck..

does anybody know of another company that makes 90 degree one piece pancakes other than, original pancake brand, i know theres somebody else making that style of shield besides them, i've got a one piece from them but they seem to be a bit larger than sarge's or wendy's shields any info would be helpfull, leterburn what do you think in comparision to wendy's is it smaller than the one piece

Alot of guys buy the original pancake and just cut them down to suite their needs.
Parent - - By leterburn (**) Date 10-09-2008 21:20
Yep - I like the Wendy's 2 piece over the "original pancake" 1 piece - and the quality of the Wendy's outdoes Sarges too - in my opinion....  I've not owned a Sarge's but buddys have - the finish is a lesser quality.

tomwatersonline.com has the original pancake hood.  PLwelder.com has a two piece one that looks lighter to me.

yea, i like the wendys better than the sarges also, iv always had sarges until i ordered a wendys just to get a white one, the side piece comes strait back (sarges is on a bit of an angle) and i love it havnt had the first piece of buckshot in the ear hole since.

sarges hoods seem to be smaller than wendy's shields, which is better quality

On Wendy's website she states three different types: Original, Auto, Chita.  What are the differences cause they all looked the same by the pcture.
Parent - By pipeliner 798 (**) Date 10-11-2008 01:13
they are the same hoods, auto and chita have a deeper pocket for your lenses so you can fit autos and cheaters in with your dark and clear lens, but just lookin at the hoods you want see any difference
Parent - By JohnJohn (**) Date 10-11-2008 01:15
Thats the depth or the face piece. The auto one holds an auto lense, the chita holds a cheeter lense etc.etc. Sarges come ready for anything, at least mine did.

i cut my one piece down to the size of a sarges. i liked t alot better after that
Parent - By K.Sexton26 (**) Date 10-11-2008 06:40
i like to see a pic of the shield you cut down, what did you use to cut it with and how did you lay it out

Also cold weather they don't fog up as easy if you keep them warm they almost don't fog at all. And then weight, wind, and a lot easier on the eyes.

I just got my first pancake hood the other day. I ordered the original one piece from Tom Waters simply because they looked to be the best built to me.

My question is, what do you guys use to get them to fit your face tighter? I've got a lot of sanding to do on mine and I was just wondering if  there was a quicker way.

Also I would like to wear my prescription glasses (Tom Waters 44) under this thing and I was wondering if any further modifacation was needed to be able to comfortably wear my glasses.

Thanks

i took a dremil tool and sanded it alot quicker.
Parent - - By sbcmweb (****) Date 10-12-2008 20:35
You gotta sand them down regardless, right??
Parent - - By shorthood2006 (****) Date 10-12-2008 22:49
yes. the better you sand it..the better it will fit YOUR face. when you get it right....it will fit like a good pair of leather gloves.
Parent - By shorthood2006 (****) Date 10-12-2008 22:52
if you dont sand it, it will not fit your face. VERY uncomfortable.
Parent - By sbcmweb (****) Date 10-12-2008 23:13
I want to buy one. Just to check it out.
Parent - By sbcmweb (****) Date 10-12-2008 20:33
Wild..... :-)

Where can I get one?????

I, being a USA Horror Film fanatic, would expect the wearer of this mask to be wielding a chainsaw, not a stinger. :-)

We call them monkey hoods in the boilermakers on this side of the pond. We usually use the huntsman models which have a regular 2X4 inch flip lens like the old tiger hoods. Never used one with round lenses. Where do you get the lenses and shades? How much are they? I have found out that when they tell to bring your monkey hood out you really don't want to go where they are sending you to weld LOL.
