hello, i was recently asked by our local SWAT team about giving them some plate to test for armoring-up one of their vehicles. i really don't know what grade to give them. i was thinking maybe some astm a514, i have some 1/4" laying around. any ideas? what they will do is shoot the crap out of it with various calibers and see if it holds up. ( i hope they invite me to the testing).

thanks,
JJ

Try the search function of the forum here.. Type in  "armor plate"

However, I would think the DOD would be the place to go for armor plate technology... Plenty of it is unclassified.

I don't know what works, but I do know what doesn't. A 308 hunting round goes right through 3/8" A36, so mild steel isn't much protection from a common hunting rifle.

Hey there Dave!
I don't know jack about actually wleding DOD pre-qualified base metals used for Armor, but i do have this code and can use it to reference data if the need arises. So far that occasion has not arisen yet, but it's good to have it handy just incase it does. want a copy in pdf format? I'll send it to You. I'ts mostly like the D1.1 with Military standards included.
