At least the "binding" didn't break the first time I openend it like my 2006 edition did.  But maybe that's because I've gotten used to handling D1.1's with exta care.
Parent - - By welderbrent (*****) Date 10-15-2008 15:07
Just a note on helping the binding to last longer- my 2006 still has good binding, granted I may not use it as often as some of you do.

I was taught as a youngster to set a book on its' binding, open both covers gently to flat, take a few pages from each side and do the same, keep going till you reach the center.  I do this about three times before I ever start looking thru the book.  Same with D1.1.  I have paperback and hardbound books that are over 50 yrs old, well used, and still with bindings.

It has worked on my D1.1 and may help extend the life of yours as well.  Someone is going to say " Who has time to do that?"  Some people sure spend a lot of time reading through this site, work your book while your reading.

My two cents worth if you really want to keep the binding on for a while.

Have a Great Day.  Brent

That is some sage advice Brent...thanks for sharing.

I received my copy as well. Happy to see they acted on my question regarding the visual acceptance criteria of welded studs. Now they include a direct link to Table 6.1.

I didn't see if they clarified the need to qualify welders for downward progression when repairing undercut using downward progression. Maybe it's in there too.

My binding split already. Time to put it into a three ring binder that will last a tad longer. Imagine, a "$400" book that doesn't last the first day or use (make that perusal). Talk about built in obsolescence!

Best regards - Al

"the visual acceptance criteria of welded studs. Now they include a direct link to Table 6.1." -- quote

.......in paragraph 7.5.5.7 they referenced paragraph 6.9, which has a direct link to Table 6.1

Previous editions of D1.1 (2004 for example) direct you to clause 7.5.5.7, which is a dead end. There is no linkage to Table 6.1. The new 2008 edition provides the direct link to table 6.1 needed to clarify the inspection requirements.

correct, they made a broad swipe at it(in paragraph 6.6.1) by saying that the contractor's responsibility for visual inspection was to make sure that the welding/fabrication conformed to the code(in so many words)....but it now nails it to Table 6.1, no grey area there.

BTW, after looking at the new D1.1(2008), what do you figure the reason was to change the Sections to Clauses?....now i have to retrain my thinking when talking D1.1 and when including references.

John,
I was wondering the same thing, and I will have to retrain as well. I am big on the use of proper terminoligy.

John,
It has to do with AWS having to conform to the latest ANSI procedures for the adoption of standards as ANSI standards.  ANSI now uses that terminology and any ANSI approved standard must as well.  I suppose it comes from ISO and similar efforts.

Jim12,  I think for the price of the book, we should all write AWS and insist they get a better binding from the publishers.

Meantime, anyone who didn't understand my post explaination wouldn't understand a DVD documentary with supporting evidence in writing in triplicate so wouldn't be worth the time it would take to present a formal written procedure.

Have a Great Day,  I will (sunny and 70 in central AZ today).  Brent

While I was out in the shop it occurred to me that the way I worded this may not come across in a spirit of humor.  Rather pure humor or a little bit sarcastic humor, I took Jim's comment as jest and intended a reply in kind. While there may be a sprinkling of truth in my own comment, it was still in jest.  Hope everyone took it that way.  I am not easily offended.  Brent

That's good to know, Brent.  So I take it the DVD is on the way?

They call the sections clauses in the S/S code also.  I thought that was the exception, now I guess its the rule.
Two days into my new 08 and I haven't had any pages fall out yet :)
