ASME Section VIII Div. 1 requires that when longitudinal seams on different courses meet they shall be staggered or separated by no less than 5 times the thickness of the thicker plate. (unless at least 4" on each side of the circumferential weld are radiographed).  Ref. UW-9 (d).  Is anyone aware of a like requirement in ASME B31.3?  I can't find one and I know it's good workmanship to do this, but is it mandatory?

B31.3 deals with piping. I dont believe adjacent longitudinal seams is addressed.

Thanks for the confirmation.  It was as I thought.  We try to offset, but it isn't always possible.  Thanks again.

Kahunna is correct. This is not addressed in B31.3 but may be addressed in customer specifications
