I have a bunch of angle, but it's a little too thin for you. If you could use it, it's 3/16" I believe 1 1/4" X 1 1/4". I can bring it with me when I come to Dallas next spring. I have 4 full pieces, 20' long. I'll probably keep one, but if you can use it, if I end up coming, I'll bring it with me. We can swap for a snap on tool box. LOL :-)

3/16 wont hold up to the pressure of the bolts i'm gonna bolt the rack to the exciter housing i have 1 now it's carbon out of 1 1/2'' x 1 1 1/2'' square tubing heavy wall and 5/8 sucker rod it serves it's pirpose but just wanted something a lil fancy is all and by this sprig i'll of come up with a different idea

thanks for your help stainless is stainless to me dont really matter

The angle iron I have will work for the lengths that you are wanting but not the pipe.  The angles only need to be 2" long?

Parent - - By JeremyW83 (***) Date 11-03-2008 02:55
I know I will be able to cut them I will see about finding a 3/4" drill bit.

I will try and have them cut by Tuesday if I can remeber to pick them up.

I'm gonna be able to do 1/2" like we discussed earlier today.  Burned up two buts today and dont even have two holes drilled.

Jeremy, start with a sharp bit, run about 250-300 RPM, use cutting oil and heavy feed pressure. A dull bit will work harden the stainless and cause problems. It is usually easier to drill a smaller hole, about 5/32"-3/16" first to clear the web of the larger bit if You don't have a power feed drill. Ease off as the drill starts to break through the work.

Yeah buddy, drill it cool and hard. For that big of a hole you need to work up to that size. Start out with 1/8 to 1/4, whatever punches through the best, and work up to 3/4.

I was it was just a mistake to go out and buy a bit from your regular mom and pop store.  I could have just gone right next door and buy a good hss bit from Fastenal.

Don't make a mistake at Fastenall.  You need a Cobalt Bit set.  By now you'd probably be better off routing the holes out with carbide burrs.  Once you work harden the SS with dull CS bits, you can just snap those expensive Cobalt Bits with the first bite.  Don't throw good money after bad.

I have plenty of angle.  I am going to be starting fresh plus I have a lead on a drill press.  When I buy bits from Fastenal I get the Nors or Nordic brand or something like that.  Plus I get 5% off.  I am also going to be buying a bottle of TAP Juice.

like i said blow a hole in it with a plasma cutter no big deal dont kill urself over it
Parent - By sbcmweb (****) Date 11-05-2008 05:00
Something you can consider, although somewhat primitive is displacing the metal with a torch & punch. Stainless isn't going to cut readily like carbon steel due to it's content of nickel & chrome, but you can heat it glowing white hot with a torch & drive a punch thru the heated area. Sure, it's not rocket science, but it will work. Then, you could use a carbide burr to clean up the holes.

Like Joe said, don't spend big bucks on bits if you don't need to. It's not like you're making a fortune on the work anyways.

I would try the displacement method if you can't find a local shop to shoot the holes with a plasma cutter for $ 20 or so.

Just a thought. I wouldn't say anything if I hadn't been there with a "freebie" that ended up costing me a bundle.

Good luck. S.W.

Not to mention a 3/4" S&D Cobalt bit is NOT going to be cheap.

Best off blowing the holes with plasma, even paying someone to do it is better than flushing money down the tubes like that.

You never said if you have had any good pizza lately. :-)

Jeremy,
Joe makes a good point. Make sure you get the correct bit for the job.

jrw159 :-)

He is good for something. LOL :-)

He's exactly right. Workharden stainless & you're in for a nightmare drilling it. D2 is much the same. You only get one shot with that stuff & you better well be running at the right speed & have plenty of coolant. Antifreeze mixed with soap & water works well.

FWIW S.W.

if you have a plasma cutter then use that they'll have bolts thru them with washers nobody will see them it dont matter to me either way dont be buring up them hi dollar bits wow that sucks how much are the bits
Parent - - By JeremyW83 (***) Date 11-05-2008 22:24
I have a line on a plasma.  A local guy is building me some other stuff probably get the holes blown for free.

Will be workin on it tommarrow.

cool deal just blow holes in the 1's you tried to drill no big deal
