In the UK (and other parts of the world), that term is used to describe downhill pipeline construction.

In the US, it's used (infrequently) to describe pipe fabrication done "in place", and "one piece at a time", ie not prefabricated on skids or in jacks.

We always refered to it as the mittered sections in a 90 or a 45 deg like how they used to do it back in the day. ;-)

We always used it in a neg. way to descripe a fitter who could not fit worth a flip. :)
