Dear Lawrence:
Hi
I have a question about BOX section on design columns of moment frames. I want to ask you if we use FILLET weld in corner joint on BOX section, or we must use only BUT JOINT & GROOVE weld?

thanking in advance,
best regard

alireza,

Structural detailing and engineering are not my specialty so I cannot provide an answer for your question.

However there are many floks on this forum who do have great experience with column design and moment connections.

Hopefully they will see your question and respond.

What structural design code is in effect for this structure?  Are you the designer?

dear sir
yes, I m A structure designer & inspector.
the code for design is AISC or UBC.
there is maximum moment in box section on corner of section, but the designer usually dont attention this & design fillet weld for the corners.
I want to know is it right? or we should be design only groove weld for montage plates for box?
thanks a lot sir

Why do you believe a fillet weld is not appropriate for this case?
