Looks like a lot of fun.  "Playin and layin in the mud".

Are the insides of water pipe coated?
Parent - By pipehead (***) Date 11-29-2008 15:11 Edited 11-29-2008 17:05
Yeah most of the water ine will have a mortar coating about 1" thick except where the joints are because alot of those joints are double weld which means inside and out, then a crew will patch the missing section.

Ah the mud ain't bad most the time.......

I'd say I my split it 50/50 between water and oil and gas so not always in the mud!

Here are some photos of a line we did a few years back. 78" water line. Switched over to the LN-25 after this line. A lot more dependable when they fall off of the top of the pipe...

You welded with my uncle down there on the east valley line. You were working for G.T.? with pat?
Parent - - By tnhnt (***) Date 12-01-2008 03:20
Ya i sure did. Also worked with Pat out in Texas on the 84". Talked with him today, he was getting ready to fly back to San Diego to head back to the reline. I might be heading back out there to help on that line if i can get things wrapped up here in western Colorado.
Parent - - By pipehead (***) Date 12-01-2008 05:41
Ya I prolly gonna head out there too! For a little while. How are things on the western slope?
Parent - - By tnhnt (***) Date 12-02-2008 03:34
Things have been real crazy for the past 8 weeks. 6 10's and 12's. Just finished installing a new compressor at the Hayden Power House. Had a bunch of heavy wall, 18" stainless and some chrome piping. How much longer did Pat have down in San Diego. He was saying that he might try to hit that 60" up there north of Denver. He said he should be done out there before that fires off...

I was going to call Kevin to get the particulars on the reline in AZ.

I talked to joe last night and he said they still had 680 or so liners left to put in.... and today ed called me and said kevin is still a couple weekes out....
Parent - - By tnhnt (***) Date 12-03-2008 03:17
Ya Cayle I talked with him the other night. I might be headed out that way in the next week or so. So are you thinking about hitting San Diego before Phoenix or just hitting Phoenix. If you come to San Diego it would be great to meet you so I could finally put a face with a name...

I thinking SD then hopefully kevin could use me in phx.... cause I could take my horses down to phx with me and rope all winter!

How many amp welder do you need to have to run wire. I saw a post for a waterline job in Southern Cali but it said you had to have a 500amp or bigger machine and 600' of welding lead. If thats the case I guess my 300D wouldnt cut it.
Parent - - By JTMcC (***) Date 12-03-2008 22:52
Of course you can run some wires at really low amperage. You knew that tho.
But when an employer puts a limitation on the equipment required, it's because he's seen what actually works well, and what doesn't work well, in that particular field.
Show up on a water line with a SA-200 and 125' of lead....they'll just chuckle at you. Show up on a mainline construction job with a vantage 500 and 600' of lead......... and they'll chuckle as well.
Different streaks for different freaks I say ; )

I see. It sounds like from the way yall are talking that water lines are mostly done with wire, is this true. So my 300D would probably be to small for water line work?
Parent - By pipehead (***) Date 12-04-2008 17:06
Ok You 300D would be fine thats what i've always ran. I calif. yes they run alot of wire but alot of other states run 5p or hippy
Parent - - By tnhnt (***) Date 12-04-2008 19:54
Ya your 300D would work fine. I have seen alot of guys running those on water lines. The bad thing is is that you need 600' ft. of lead, remote cable, power chord, CO2 hose and ussually a little wagon or some kind of cart to load your feeder and lights on and your wire wheel and grinders and a couple extra boxes of wire to help move everything down the line. It does wear on a guy moving that much equipment if you have a long pull...

Its a nightmare dragging all that crap!!! I am definately not looking forward to it again!!!
Parent - By ironbanger (*) Date 12-05-2008 04:02
I am out here on the socal job your talking about, and a 400 0r 500 amp machine is probably best suited for this as they have the volts and aux power to run 400-800 feet of lead to your ln-25 and run lights grinders etc. The 300d will do it but it is hard on them and everyone i know has had trouble with breakdowns especialy the brushes wearing out.
