anyone try the flash drives yet, I was wondering if there is a search function and a quick way to find clauses?
Also, what if you already bought a 2008 code book, will they let you add a flash for the $50 price?

Website says it allows searching.

My question is whether you can bring that flash drive around with you to multiple computers.  The downloadable PDFs were stuck on whichever computer you put them on first.

And if you can, I want royalties!  I suggested flash drives to them when I was b1tching about the non-portability of the PDFs.

"This drive will function as a single transportable copy, allowing you to carry multiple standards without bulky print copies. The flashdrive allows electronic searching and allows you to display on a single monitor or project the code to a screen for presentations, trainings and discussions. The flashdrive does not support networking, does not allow for print or electronic copies, and does not allow cutting, deletting or other edits of critical code content. "

I would think you could plug into any computer and access it.

I think They want to screw me, maybe to pay you royalties, lol

here is what they sent me when I inquired about getting a flashdrive with the D1.1 I had already ordered:
Hello Carl,

I can give you the D1.1/08 on a flash drive for $148.00. This is a combo price deal.  The original price would be membership $294.00 plus $50.00 for the flash drive format.  To place an order you would have to call us at (800)-welding or you can e-mail me.

Thank You,

Here's my understanding of the pricing, after a conversation with the awspubs people:

It's $50 for the drive itself, not its contents, plus the same-as-paper price for the contents.
So you pay the same for the code whether it's on paper or on the drive, plus $50 for the drive.
If you get multiple codes on one drive, it's still $50 for the one drive, plus the total cost of the codes.
If you get multiple codes each on their own drive, it's the cost of all the codes plus $50 for each drive.

They also give discounts for multiple formats of the same code.  If you buy the code on paper plus on flash (which I think you'll want to do because you can't print from the flash), the cost of the second format is 25% of the nonmember price.  Which, if you get the 25% discount as a member, brings you back up to what the nonmember price would have been for one format.

If you already bought your paper copy, they'll still give you that discount; they can look up your order.

So if you want D1.1 on paper, and you're a member, it's $294.
If you want D1.1 on flashdrive, it's $294 + $50 = $344.
If you want D1.1 and D1.5 on one flashdrive, it's $294 + $198 + $50 = $542.
If you want D1.1 and D1.5 each on their own flashdrive, it's $294 + $198 + 2*$50 = $592.
If you want D1.1 on flashdrive and paper both, it's $392 (nonmember price) + $50 = $442.  (Can also be thought of as $294 + $392/4 + $50.)
If you already bought your paper copy of D1.1 and you now want to buy the flashdrive, it's $392/4 + $50 = $148.
If you are a nonmember and you want D1.1 on flashdrive and on paper both, it's $392*1.25 + $50 = $540.

They're not set up to take orders for this over the web; you have to call them and explain what you want.  It's a custom job of which particular combination of codes you want on your drive.  They said that anything that can currently be ordered as PDF can be put on the drive, and they can fit 3 or 4 codes on the drive.  (I'm guessin' they can get a lot more of the skinny codes like A5 on there.)  They can also do back editions, so if for some reason you want the last 3 years of D1.1 on your drive, they'll sell you that too.

Maybe they thought you wanted to switch an order from paper to flash.  Or maybe they left out the word "extra".

I don't think written communication is WEX's strong suit.  I had a bunch of email back-and-forth about the pricing, none of which was clear, but then over the phone they made plenty of sense.  I think it's a case of "I understand what I mean; why don't you understand what I mean?"

Which happens a lot.  Particularly with technical people.

Well, it was a couple months after I recieved the book, so I doubt thats the case, Maybe the help didn't quite understand the pricing at the time I asked!

I love flash drives and use them all the time.  But like with everything computer, they can crash.  I just had my new Vista computer do an automatic Microsoft update while a flash drive was in place.  It totally wiped out the flash drive and even my computer repair shop said they couldn't recover any data from it.

Make sure AWS will replace your flash drive promptly if it goes south.

I bet if you sent them the carcass they'd be willing to replace it.  Might want to double-check that when you place the order, though.
