D1.1 has 2 test plate options for unlimited thickness for CJP Groove welds. Fig. 4.21 & 4.30. My question is if you test in 2G position to Fig 4.30 does this limit you to be qualified to just a bevel groove and not a v groove like the way Fig. 4.21 is.

No, there is no limit on the groove configuration qualified (see 4.23.1 also).  With regards to production CJP welding, the welder would however be limited to CJP welds with backing or backgouging (i.e. no open root joints) in only the flat and horizontal positions (see Table 4.10).  If you need the welder qualified to all positions, have him/her test in both 3G & 4G (ref Table 4.10).

See table 4.8 essential variable 30, qualification of any CJP groove weld qualifies for any groove detail conforming with the requirements of 3.12 or 3.13, and joint B-U4X is for horizontal position.

The Engineer shall determine the suitability of all joint details to be used in a
welded assembly, is possible a Mock up. (See 1.4.1)
