I believe you would have to perform some test welds, and do some macro cuts to determine your Z-loss.  Only then could you have a target for your weld throat.

The weld throat can be indirectly measured by measuring the face size If: z-loss and the included angle are known.  If you have those pieces of informtation trig can be used to determine the throat.
