You'll spend a little time in an apprenticeship. You'll get excellent training beyond welding up coupons in a test booth. You probably won't have any problem staying working as an apprentice if you show up to work, on time and do your job. You'll have the potential to work in any number of places making excellent money and benefits. In my opinion union is the way to go just be patient and learn all you can.
