For some reason i cant seem to get my cap to stand up. It wants to lay down with a little valley in it. I turn my machine down. I run it on 240 and 50. i slow down and it builds up too fast and runs. I cant figure what im doin wrong. any tips would be appreciated. thanks.

James,

I think that, at least me, we need a little more information here.  What process are we talking about?  I presume we are looking at a wire- type & size?  What material are you welding?  And what thickness? What position? If vertical- up or down?  What type of joint?  How wide a gap?

We can't see it without pictures and we can't read your mind.

Appears you are rather new to the forum- WELCOME.  Guys on this forum are very free and open with tips, advice, and opinions.  But we need more info.

Have a Great Day,  Brent

There's no need for more info, he's trying to puddle cap downhill.

If your cap is too concave you need to strip the side first.

Or tune the machine a bit. That is slow the rpm down a bit, or roll the rack... but you need to get someone with experience to show you how.

Sometimes more experience will help you hump the cap up. Sometimes they are just flat at 3 oclock.

JT,

Your response is accurate with the info available.  I just like to be more precise in my responses and try to understand more fully exactly what the problem is and how to fix it.  And if I don't know the answer with more info, it will give everyone else all the info they need to come to a precise answer.

But, as long as he has a proper understanding of what he is doing, your advice will take him the right direction to try to figure it out for himself or look for someone to assist him.

Have a Great Day,  Brent

The terminology he used is a dead giveaway in my field.

Onthe just over flus cap it all depends on what the inspector wants Ive had straight up dicks that want 1/2" wide and humped up all the way around on .219 wall. If your cappin with 3's then try it at 190 and 60 and remember light wall pipe cant take the heat heavy wall can so your gonna have to turn down. Also dont hang around too long the slower you go the more concave it will be.

ok then I'll burn some rods over the weekend....       thewelder:   a puddle cap is where you aren't stepping your cap you're staying up in the puddle and carrying alot of metal

The answer to your higher gear not wanting to stand up is the higher the gear the more arc force. Therefore more you have more of a spraying action to your arc so it wants to dig instead of laying on top. Kay can probly explain better than I.

I hope Kay does or someone does because now I'm confused??

I have been burnin some rods and i used a 5/32 and ran i little stringer down the middle and that seemed to help some. Any thoughts?

ya you can strip the middle then spray one on on er it all depends every welds different

Thank you, I got it know.

Puddle cap has nothing to do with whether you step it or not, it's simply a one bead cap as opposed to a two bead or three bead cap.
The 798 test will require a puddle cap on .500 wall, they will give you every oportunity to do well, it's up to the welder.
Many puddle caps are stepped if the man likes to do it that way.
When you test they'll tell you, either puddle cap or three bead cap, ect.
