Can anyone tell me the weldability of black iron to ASTM A53 grade "A" steel. I'm trying to determine whether or not a black iron plug valve can be welded to ASTM A53 grade "A" 1" steel pipe. If this is possible I would like to just spot weld the valve to the pipe, what rod would be appropriate for this application? Should I just try to to use a weld end steel valve to weld to the end of this pipe?

Thanks!

The valve body should have a marking or a nameplate identifying the material.

The term black iron is non-specific.

If the valve body is cast steel it will weld like any other carbon steel. Let us know what markings or information is on the valve body.

If the connection end of the valve is a socket or butt weld end you are in pretty good shape.

Good Day
