am i right in thinking an existing weld procedure that used GTAW grade wire ER70S-2 and is going to be updated to ER70S-6 does not need a new ASME IX procedure qualification?

any help ? advice greatly appreciated

You do not need a new qual. But you do need to make explicit on the WPS the use of S-6. Or at least an S-X that allows both. Don't be surprised however if your customer rejects it at first based upon the A-1 deposit chemistry requirement. You will need to have some control over your S-6 certs to confirm A-1.

Sorry to bring up the old thread - but this question has been brought up recently.

Let me see if I understand this....

You can use the 70S-6 if the C of C shows Mn and Si content below or meeting the 1.6 Mn or the 1.0 Si requirement?

If the Mn or Si content is above, then it does not conform to the A# of 70S-2.  In fact, it does not conform to ANY A#....what then?

QW404.5(c) states that the chemical analysis from the weld deposit or from the Mfg's or suppliers C of C can be used (paraphrased).  So let's say you actualy do another PQR and the 70S-6 has a Mn of 1.7 and a Si of 1.2, then you're qualified to use the 70S-6 only up to those levels??  What if you get the next batch of wire with a Mn of 1.8?

If I'm seeing this correctly, no matter what, you have to have a serious control over the 70S-6 wire, whether you use it under the 70S-2 PQR or create a new one for the higher levels??

Thsi A# thing is throwing me off too.  If it doesn't fit into any particular A#, what do you do then?

js55 is correct.  I will only add that Mn content can be the problem that you need to watch.  You need to make sure the Mn reported for the E70S-6 is less than 1.60%.  Mn for AWS is as follows:
E70S-2     0.90-1.40%
E70S-6     1.40-1.85%
In their literature, Lincoln reports normal as 1.63% for their E70S-6.  To use this wire, requal would be required.
