Do impact tests on PQR stay valid indefinitely? (D1.1)  A PM was reviewing some WPS for a current project, and they were qualified in 1999, and his question was, "don't Charpy tests expire after a while"?  I think not, and I cant find anything in '04 D1.1.  (my '06 and '08 are in the truck)

Did he give a reason for his question?
It seem to be a very very strange question to me.

To answer your question: No a charpy test does not expire.

D1.5 lists 36 months for Fracture Critical and 60 months for all others. Maybe he got them confused.

So the test is not valid 60 months after it has been performed?

I'd certainly like to hear the answer to that as well. As well as if anybody knows the metallurgical or mechanical justification.

The D1.5 restriction means that yes, the test expires 60 (or 36) months after it was performed.

There's not a whole lot of justification for it.  There has been discussion of removing it.  But there's paranoia about removing it.

The only reason I could think of to keep it is that it's possible that the formulation of the consumables might have changed just a wee bit over the years, not enough to change classification, but enough to change performance.

My prediction is that the non-fracture-critical limit (60 months) will be gone by the next D1.5 edition or the one after that.  Fracture-critical (36 months), less likely.

p.s.  Note to those who recognize me:  I disagree with the requirement, but I plan to continue to enforce it; I go along with the AWS democratic code-writing process.  So don't get any bright ideas.
