I was looking at some AD hoods from Miller, Lincoln, and some other brands and they displayed a "reaction timing" of figures like 1/1200 of a second, or 1/3600 of a second. That reaction time may be miniscule, but I think after a day of tack welding you eyes might hurt from that reaction time. This concerns me because I might want to get an AD hood for shop class, especially for when I do overhead or am tacking with electrodes.

What is a good reaction time from a AD hood? I saw that some are "solar powered", I assume it is powered from the light given off by your arc? Will two sensors be good enough, or should I go with a 3 sensor design? Most of the hoods from major brands are in my price range.

Fritz, do a search on auto dark hoods. There have been a few really extensive threads on this topic.

Fritz,
You only have "two irreplaceable eyes!"
Use "the best" and fastest reaction time hood you can afford
or
use the old standard ultra-safe fixed shaded lens. ;o)
...Hobart Pipeliner style hood and rubber band headgear with shade 9 AO Mirror lens.....

Old school is the kewl school ;oD
