Was in lower Ohio over the weekend and saw loads of the Rockies Express Pipeline pipe being transported down I 75 out to the ditch looked to be 36" x 1/2" thick or more. I weld structural and was just wondering how long it take one of you guys to weld up the pipe joint? Do you use wire feed or all rods if rods it must take a few boxes. Going to try and get back out there and observe some of the welding. Thanks

Most of the REX project is done by automatic welders except tie-ins.

It's 42" .486 wall for the line pipe and .750 or .888 on the bore pipe. Everything except bores and tie-ins are done with the auto shacks and think the boys on our spread was doin about 100 welds in 10 hours, give or take depending on how much trouble they was having. You could weld up a tie-in in about 2-3 hours and the heavier wall taking 6-8. We was using rod and wire for the manual welds. A 5p+ bead then 9018 hot/fill/cap or 9018 hot pass and innershield fill/cap.

100 welds in 10 hours? Ten welds an hour? I guess that means multiple shacks going at once? I've never seen this sort of operation so I'm curious.

I seen something like this on youtube. Not sure if it's the 100 welds in 10hr type crew but it was cool to watch!!

"Sheer competition and drive can enable pipeliners to set new records for production. This welding crew was tired, but very proud after welding 121 pipe joints in one day on this 56" Middle East pipeline. These highly motivated pipeliners considerably surpassed the previous record by 20 welds. More astounding, they required no special equipment to reach the new feat. Yep, 100+ welds in a 10 hour day once they got the shacks straightened out. Front end did the internal bead then 1 hotpass shack, a couple fill shacks and a few cap shacks. I'm wantin to say we had 6-8 shacks all together. It took a couple weeks to get them runnin right but once they did, it was off to the races. Here's a video of a hot pass shack usin the CRC machines like we had: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFTzus_W8Y8   Welcome to the future of most big inch mainline welding jobs, and yes the front end boys were movin as fast as they are on the video. Here's a video of the what the front end looks like puttin the bead in: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtRaYNTKm-g

And I though RTing 100+ pipe welds a day was good.
